ICC backs new moms in cricket: What helps postpartum athletes

Published on: June 24, 2026, 1 a.m. | Source: The Indian Express

The ICC has introduced its first-ever post-pregnancy return-to-play guidelines for women cricketers, providing a structured framework to help athletes safely resume competitive sport after childbirth. Built around the “6 Rs” — Ready, Review, Restore, Recondition, Return, and Refine — the guidelines recognise that motherhood should not end a sporting career and emphasise personalised recovery plans. Experts say postpartum athletes face significant physical and emotional challenges, including weakened core and pelvic floor muscles, reduced stamina, hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and recovery from childbirth or surgery. Successful return to sport depends on medical assessments, gradual rehabilitation, proper nutrition, hydration, mental health support, and adequate rest. The guidelines encourage athletes to prioritise recovery over rushing back to competition, with experts stressing that every woman’s postpartum journey is unique and that the right support can help mothers return to elite sport safely and successfully.
